CAREER GOALS + DEVELOPMENT

Future career goals of either a Penetration Tester or a Security Consultant, luckily, both require a similar soft / hard skillset, heavily emphasising a necessity in strong oral communication & documentation capability (Cyber Degrees, 2018)1 , which I have acquired both in my prior IT diploma studies, and working 4 years within the hospitality industry, which relies heavily on communication and critical thinking skills;  furthermore I will exercise these abilities throughout my Cyber Security course.

Penetration Testing and Security Consulting are very demanding in technical skills relating to encryption, operating systems (Linux, Unix, windows), application security and networking. (InfoSec, 2018)2 These are areas in which I need to thoroughly improve my skills, and upon completion of my current studies feel I will be avid about all subject topics.

TIMELINE DETAIL

On the 12th of April, Deakin will host a University Exchange Expo at the Burwood Campus, a Geelong bus is available – but the event will be a valuable insight into getting familiar with Deakin’s partnered universities around the world, and to have any questions about the experience you’d like answered. (EventBrite, Deakin 2018)3

3rd May, Deakin hosts the VCE and Careers Expo, is “Australia’s biggest education and careers expo is now in its 26th year” (Deakin 2018) 4, I felt this event would be beneficial for building my understanding of what my job aspirations entail and help construct a pathway to them.

Although not limited to, but I’ve selected the Trimester break in October 2018 to take the Certificate of Ethical Hacking course exam, as a lot of the advertised Pen Tester Jobs require this certificate. (EC-Council 2018)5

On May 10th, a valuable employment preparation workshop is being run at Deakin, for students wanting to “learn how to identify your interest, values, motivators and skill-set” (Unihub, 2018)6, which will help me identify employers I would like to work for.

The Experience and Employment Expo (held on the 21st March for Burwood Campus, 27th Geelong) “brings over 100 employers to Campus”(DeakinTalent, 2018)7 giving me the opportunity to greatly network, learning about “internships, vacation work, volunteering, international experiences and graduate programs.”(DeakinTalent, 2018)7
